You ride the stretch of track that runs from the mouth of the Loop out towards Richmond Station. Coming up from the depths of the underground to a blue sky and a full view of the skyline feels like <<cyclinglink "dusting your hands off" "breaking a fever" "coming up for air from underwater">>.
<p>The best time to take the train this way is late afternoon and you're leaving a rough day behind. A day that makes you feel like a sticker, or a band poster peeling away from a wall, being balled up with frayed edges and old grey glue. The walls around here show off <<click "green tile">><<removeclass "#picture4" "hidden">><</click>> and clean brick skin, a little crumbly and warm from the afternoon sun. Jacqui is the first friend you know to move out of your suburb and into her own apartment. The stretch of track between Richmond and Burnley feels something like <<cyclinglink "like a pint in a beer garden in winter, huddled together with an old in big coats on a bench seat" "tea in a new friend's backyard, at their plastic outdoor setting under an overcast sky">>. Between East Richmond and Burnley you can see over the graffitied fences and into people's backyards. You like the backyards with the <<cyclinglink"trampolines""trampoline frames""torn trampoline skins">> and <<cyclinglink"swimming pools""drained swimming pools""swimming pools that have gone all green and are probably breeding frogs">>.
You are best to take this track in late autumn/early winter, maybe an hour before it starts to get dark. The lights are on in the carriages and the lights are on in the pub and soon lights will be turning on in the back rooms of people's houses. You can look from the carriage of a warm, well lit train into the corners of the warm, well lit <<click "beer garden">><<removeclass "#map6" "hidden">><</click>>, the small squares of light linked together like a part of a puzzle that's all <<click "yellow pieces.">><<removeclass "#photo1" "hidden">><</click>>

A few of the suburbs around where you grew up, including this one, used to be all orange groves. A lot of the land has been developed, first into houses with large blocks of land, then into three or four houses per block. Still, when you take the bus past your old highschool on the way to your Dad's new house, you see the hobby farm is still there, complete with horses in the front paddocks, across the road from the [[football oval.]]
<i> Now arriving at Mitcham </i>
For almost a year, you spend every Saturday night at Chris' house. Chris lives with his mum in a two bedroom house at the Mitcham/Forest Hill border, but she's always out visiting her boyfriend on Saturdays, so their house becomes your house for the night. It's much too frequent to be much like a party, you guess this is what it will be like if you move out into a sharehouse, hanging out with your housemates, only once a week, for almost a year.

On colder nights you sit out in the backyard and burn wood from the Forest Hill Reserve in a washing machine drum. You like to burn the weeks junk mail to watch how the chemicals in the inks make different coloured flames. You assign each colour to something you hope to come true, like a small spell stuck between the stapled pages, peeled back by the flames.
If the flames burn <<cyclinglink "red, you will kiss someone by the end of these holidays""pink, James will tell you that he likes you""blue, Safia will tell you that she likes you""yellow, you will ask your sister to teach you how to do your make up properly. "green, you will post a poem on deviant art and it will get more than one hundred likes""orange everything will stay exactly the same, but somehow you will be happier">>.
You try and catch a colour on the end of a skinny stick, and use the charcoal end to scribe your spell into the dirt. You keep getting in trouble for setting the dry ground alight.
[[go back|spell breaks.]]Most Saturday nights you watch rented DVDs in the front living room, in the dark, under blankets. Two or three of you have the landline number and will use your mobile phones to call it during horror movies. Sneak out through the back door to bang on the front window. You watch The Ring through a threadbare sheepskin, blanket and fingers jammed so hard into your ears you get wax on the wool, trying to block out the worst parts. [[Go back to Jacqui's house|Jacqui's House]]You sit at the kitchen table with a bottle of sambuca in the middle. The room is hot and loud, you would rather be sitting outside on a roof, or at least the balcony. The friends you came with have gone home but you decided to stay. You are regretting it now. You are trying to talk, but the words are getting caught and torn on the way up your throat. What you want to say collides with what you think they want to hear, and what comes out is a mangled version of both.
"So what do you do?"

Dad doesn't work in marketing anymore. He drives trains now, and the only time you've seen him cry since was when your niece was born, and when he told you he had decided to leave your mum.

<b>The Next Train to Depart</b> is an interactive story about a life time of taking the train in and out of <<click "the city">><<removeclass "#map7" "hidden">><</click>>, and the different thoughts, feelings and memories that are now attached to the train stations. Some of the links will lead you through the story, some of them will lead on to new windows, and some won't lead you anywhere.
As you move from station to station, you may be asked to check the time. If the time is 11:11, you'll be granted a wish. It's up to you when and where you want to use your wishes.

I pay respect to all elders past, present and emerging, who are the traditional owners of the land I'm working on and writing about. I acknowledge that this is stolen land, and that sovereignty has never been ceded. </i>

[[go back|Ringwood]]You know Dad hates his job. He is in marketing, an industry that skews young, and much younger than he is now. You know that he is cracking up under the pressure of having to keep up with mortgage payments and food on the table for his wife and three kids. He sits you down one night at that table and tells you, through tears, all about how he isn't coping. Your Dad isn't afraid to cry in front of you, but you are afraid of seeing it. Whenever he looks like he is about to, you hide yourself away in [[another room.]]You know Dad hates his job. He is in marketing, an industry that skews young, and much younger than he is now.
